Creating Sacred History Together

On January 1, 2014, Michelle and I took joint steps into our 32nd year of marriage. I sent her a bouquet of fresh flowers, as I did for almost every year past. The message on the card this time read:

"To my dear lover,

Thank you for walking along side of me for 32 years. I look forward to another 32 years and more to walk with you.
Happy Anniversary!

From your lover."

I am truly thankful for the 32 years of being married to Michelle. While the most part of our journey was filled with love, excitement, happiness and joy, the sky wasn't always blue.  We have had our fair share of arguments, disagreements, disappointments, tears and heartaches. But God has been good to us; He walked along side us for every day of the 32 years.

Happy times are always easy to remember and enjoy. But truly, it is amidst the storms in our relationship that we found God's unfailing love real. It is in the trials of marital life that we learned tolerance, acceptance, forgiveness, humility, generosity and the realization of our commitment to each other. It is there we learned that we really love one another.

I remember our vow at the altar seemed simple enough --

"to have and to hold, from this day forth, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until death do us part. And to you, I pledge my faithfulness."

l also remember that as soon as our honeymoon was over, our characters were put to the test many times. We battled the urge to depart from the commitments we made on our wedding day. None of the commitments in that vow was easy to keep. For that precise reason, such a vow had to be made at the wedding so that the couple can remember to keep their promise to remain faithful to one another, come what may.

Michelle and I have worked for 32 years, that is, 11,680 days on our marriage. Moving forward, we resolve to continue to put indeliberate efforts to keep our love for one another burning brighter & stronger for the next 32 years and more.

We are conscious that we are creating history together; it is a sacred history of our lives together. Every day is an indelible entry into that historical record. Every day we have to decide what we allow to be recorded in that history book. We may still have to fight temptations, over come trials and unconditionally accept and love one another. That, we encourage one another to do.

Be our witness.
