Family life should be fun. In a world where we can easily be overcome with routine and monotony, and where the pressures of schooling or work or life itself can seem overwhelming, vacations offer an opportunity to come away, to build bonds, and to create memories.
When I look back at my own childhood, some of the things which bring the biggest smiles are those times we went on vacation together. I don¹t mean that we had to do something expensive, or go somewhere exotic. I never rode on an airplane until I was an adult! But the memories are forever etched on my heart, of times spent camping, or playing in water somewhere, or going to a museum.
Now that I have my own family it is the same way. We look forward to the times when we can get away for a break together, to eat some different foods, or just to sit around and play board games knowing that we don’t have to be anywhere, or do anything. There is a time to work. There is a time to study. There are duties and responsibilities which need to be attended to. But there also needs to be times when all of these things are set aside, when the focus completely shifts, and family becomes our number one priority.
An old proverb says that we will reap what we sow. If we sow to fun times as a family, we will reap the peace and security that a strong family brings to our lives. If we plan for meaningful holiday times that we can spend together, even the harder times we face will dwarf in the face of the realization that we are privileged to have one another. My suggestion? Put some thought and research into your next vacation. Plan to do something everyone will enjoy. Save for it. Talk about it. Be prepared. You will be glad you did.
